The city of Alexandria is located along the Western bank of the Potomac River and is roughly six miles south of downtown Washington, D.C. The Mount Vernon Trail is a popular biking, walking, and jogging path in Alexandria. The path runs through three major sections which include Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax Country. The trail is paved and is one of the oldest trails in the area. The trail offers several wonderful views of the Potomac and D.C. monuments. The trail is considered well balanced when it comes to sightseeing since it contains timeless buildings to tranquil natural surroundings.
