Aspen Colorado - Small Town With A Big Reputation

Aspen is defined by its splendid mountains, numerous outdoor activities and vigorous history. The city was originally founded as a silver mining camp and has now become one of the largest year-around resort. The city received its name from the wealth of aspen trees in the area. According to the 2005 census, the estimated population for Aspen was 5,804.

Aspen's climate is characterized by low humidity and intense sunshine. Sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended for all seasons. Aspen is notorious for its warm winter sun and for winter temperatures in the 40s. During the summer temperatures are warm and dry with temperatures occasionally as high as 90 degrees.

Aspen offers a multitude of experiences from experiencing breathtaking scenic view, wandering through the many mountain trails, and witnessing a world-class performance of music and dance. One of the hot spots in Aspen for performing arts is the Aspen Music Festival and School. The school offers discounted tickets, complimentary backstage tours, and stylish, on-site hospitality facilities for pre-concert receptions or post-concert events.

Near to the Rio Grande Park, lies a true sanctuary dedicated to the well known artist John Denver. In the John Denver Sanctuary there are grassy mounds and huge granite rocks. Carved in the granite rock are some of the lyrics of Denver’s best-loved songs. Even if you are not a fan of John Denver the park offers beautiful scenic views and has an incredible serenity ambiance.

Aspen has 18 hotels listed in the iStayGreen directory of which 4 are listed as environmentally friendly lodging. Currently 3 hotels have completed the online Environmental Audit and earned the Green Eco-Leaf Rating while the other 1 properties are purported to be "Green" but have not yet shared their eco-initiatives with iStayGreen.org.

In Aspen there are 14 properties where the environmentally friendliness is unknown and they have not yet verified their sustainability efforts with iStayGreen.org. In the state of Colorado there is a total of 907 lodging properties listed in the iStayGreen.org directory of which 74 are represented as eco-friendly. Currently there are 63 lodging properties that have earned the Green Eco-Leaf Rating. Included in the properties working toward a more sustainable travel future are Aspen hotels, Aspen resorts, Aspen bed & breakfasts, and Aspen extended stay accommodations.

When planning your Aspen vacation, or travel to Aspen we encourage you, before you book, to check rates and availability of "Green" rated hotels and lodging.
