Traverse City Michigan - the "Cherry Capital of the World"

Traverse City is the largest city in the Northern Michigan County. The city has several fresh water beaches and a nearby National Lakeshore. The city is also known as the "Cherry Capital of the World" since it hosts an annual cherry festival. According to the 2007 census, the city is estimates to have a population of 142,075.

The city of Traverse has cold winters and warm summers. During the summer temperatures can reach a high of 105 degrees. July is considered to be the warmest month of the year with highs of 105 degrees. During the winter, temperatures can fall in mid 20’s and January is considered the coolest month of the year. Snowfall is fairly common and can even be seen as late as May.

National Cherry Festival and the Dunnos Museum Center in Traverse City MI

One of the main attractions in Traverse is the National Cherry Festival. The festival was founded in 1926 and has been a tradition to the city. Every year more than 500,000 guests attend the festival. There are plenty of family activities. Some activities in the festival include cherry pit spitting and pie eating contest. During the harvest approximately more than 200,000,000 pounds of cherries are harvested.

Dunnos Museum Center is associated to the Northwestern Michigan College. The institute is dedicated in exhibiting and providing audiences with sciences, visual arts, and performing arts. The museum has three changing exhibit galleries. The museums signature collection includes the art of the Canadian Arctic. The museum also offers a variety of elegant sculpture and hands-on activities.
