Traverse City is the largest city in the Northern Michigan County. The city has several fresh water beaches and a nearby National Lakeshore. The city is also known as the "Cherry Capital of the World" since it hosts an annual cherry festival. According to the 2007 census, the city is estimates to have a population of 142,075.

The city of Traverse has cold winters and warm summers. During the summer temperatures can reach a high of 105 degrees. The museum has three changing exhibit galleries. The museums signature collection includes the art of the Canadian Arctic. The museum also offers a variety of elegant sculpture and hands-on activities.
