Wilmington North Carolina - "Hollywood of the East"

The city of Wilmington is the county seat of the New Hanover County. The city was also settled on the Cape Fear River and is just minutes away from beaches. The city also served as the childhood home of Michael Jordan and has been widely used in American Film and Television. The city has also been nicknamed as the “Hollywood of the East”. According to the 2009 census, the city is estimated to have a population of 100,192.

The city of Wilmington is considered to have a subtropical climate. Summers tend to be warm and humid. June is considered to be the warmest month of the year with average temperatures in the high 100’s. Winters are fairly cool and short. The month of January is considered to be the coolest month of the year with average temperatures in the mid 50’s.

The North Carolina Azalea Festival and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher in Wilmington NC

One of the main attractions in Wilmington city is the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. The aquarium is open to the public and is located in Kure Beach. The main focus of the aquarium is to educate visitors of the Cape Fear area and its many treasures. The aquarium has a variety of freshwater animals such as the American alligators, albino alligators, frogs, snakes, and bass. The aquarium also has an Exotic Aquatics Display in which red lionfish and spotted scorpionfish are the main attractions.

One of the main festivals in Wilmington is the North Carolina Azalea Festival. The festival takes place over a five day period. The festival celebrates local art, the magnificent gardens in the city, and the history of Wilmington. The festival has over 300,000 visitors. The festival also provides scholarships for local students and raises approximately $28,000 each year for scholarship funding.
