Gallup New Mexico - A Great Place to Find a Hotel Along Route 66

The City was named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad and was founded in 1891 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. It is located about halfway between Albuquerque, New Mexico and Flagstaff, Arizona. The famous Route 66 runs through downtown Gallup. The population is 20,209 based on the 2000 Census and is among the larger cities in New Mexico.

Gallup has a strong Indian influence and has often been called the "Indian Capital of the World", because of its location in the heart of Native American lands, and the presence of Navajo, Zuni, Hopi and other tribes. The Historic El Rancho Hotel has hosted many movie stars including the likes of John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, to Former President Ronald Reagan, Katharine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy.

Trading Posts - Art Galleries - and Historic Architecture Abound in Downtown Gallup, NM

Guests lodging in Gallup NM will find that the city experiences four seasons with large daily temperature ranges. Bring a jacket if you’re visiting in the winter because mornings can be very cold, with temperatures in the 0s to low 10s F and with mid-afternoon high temperatures to be close to 45 F. But you’ll find the summer to be comfortable with afternoon highs near 90 F, and the 40s and 50s first thing in the morning.

You’ll want to make sure to visit downtown Gallup. The 12-block downtown area is bordered by Route 66/Main Street (north), Hill Avenue (south), Fourth Street (west) and First Street (east). This is where you’ll find the trading posts and galleries, especially along Route 66 and Coal Avenue. Make sure to check out the former Rex Hotel (c. 1900) at 300 West Route 66, which is now the Rex Museum. Also popular among tourists is McKinley County Court House (located at 201 West Hill), built in 1938 with the pueblo revival style. The historic El Morro Theater (207 West Coal) is an excellent example of the decorative Spanish colonial revival style of architecture.
